California’s Basic Inspection of Terminal (BIT) program mandates 90-day inspections on any commercial motor vehicle (CMV) over 10,001 pounds. During a BIT inspection, the following are examined: steering systems, brakes, wiper blades (must work and not be worn out), wheels and tire tread depth (must be within legal limits), mirrors, functioning lights, defroster, and others.
Vehicles driven on the interstate (that is, if you drive only or primarily in California) are required to have a BIT inspection every 90 days.
How Do BIT Inspections from DOT Inspections?
BITs are required every three months, whereas the federal DOT inspection is annual. BIT and DOT inspections are very similar and include inspecting many systems and components (brakes, lights, tires, etc.) to ensure CMVs are roadworthy. Certified technicians can conduct both.
Much like DOT requirements, the California Highway Patrol (CHP), during its visit, will review driver records, vehicle maintenance, and any repair records to ensure you’re in regulatory compliance.
Typically, the BIT inspection takes the place of a DOT inspection. However, a DOT inspection can’t be used instead of a BIT due to timing.
